TUESDAY JUNE 6 (AND EVERY TUESDAY IN JUNE)
INTERDEPENDENCE DAYS: OPEN WORKSHOP
6-7:30PM

Interdependence Days are a series of free, public gatherings for residents of Broadway and nearby neighborhoods to foster community, build trust, engage in mutual aid, and imagine and enact ways of living that sustain one another. Each meeting will include a chance for participants to air besetting fears and concerns, a creative or contemplative activity (sometimes led by a guest) and the sharing of needs and skills, held together by ceremony and routine.

Interdependence Days are the next phase of the Climate Anxiety Counseling project, in which I invited strangers in Kennedy Plaza and elsewhere to share with me their climate-change-related and other anxieties (you can see some documentation of and reflections on this project at https://climateanxieties.wordpress.com).

Providence residents’ descriptions of their fears, worries and needs suggested to me that getting people together to share those concerns, and to consider creatively what forms of alleviation or response to those concerns we might be able to offer each other, would be a good next step.

WRITING SOUNDS LOUNGE
10:30AM-12PM
with scøtt reber

scøtt reber makes noise under the name ‘work/death’. what exactly noise means is open to interpretation depending on the many possible relationships between audience, environment and intention. everyday sounds organized and composed into new structures. traditionally beautiful music disintegrated back to constituent vibrations. the subtle translation of speakers playing back in a room. work/death is an attempt at moving through these multiple narratives, their various transformations and transitory states.

Youth In Action makes maps! Equal parts youth leaders and cartographers! We think that when used unconventionally, maps can be used as an act of social change. Maps can inspire or induce, bringing attention to social issues, stories, and history in a given community. With no predetermined beginning, the narrative of a map lends itself to an honest, participatory experience of location, space, and place. Join us for the first of many participatory mapping events in our “Corridor Communities” Project.

THURSDAY JUNE 22 (Thursdays, 6/22-7/27)
WRITING CLASS
6:30-9PM

Becoming Fiction

Conventionally, a line has been drawn between the factual, i.e. what has actually happened, and the fictional, i.e. what has been made up. This course is about walking and eradicating this fine line. Using a variety of texts as jumping off points, during our six weeks together, we will take from the materials of our own lives, the lives of others, from historical events, etc.  and move out into the space of fiction through our writing, i.e. we will actively engage in the process through which something can be made into— can become—fiction. A willingness to engage closely with assigned readings, to take risks, and to do the necessary work, is expected. And the process, it is my hope, will be both joyful and empowering.  One should feel free to let the materials of life become—to make—art.

Among the writers and artists whose work we will likely be exploring are Susan Howe, Friedrich Nietzsche, Zoe Leonard, Joseph McElroy, Walter Benjamin, Virginia Woolf, and Thomas Bernhard.

MUSIC SHOW
7:30-9:30PM
$10 SUGGESTED

Boston-based traditional folk singer, guitarist & bouzouki player Lindsay Straw is celebrating the release of her second solo album “The Fairest Flower of Womankind” with a split bill show with Providence’s The Vox Hunters at 186 Carpenter in Providence!

Lindsay’s music is heavily influenced by British folk legends June Tabor, Frankie Armstrong, John Renbourn, and the Scottish Traveller singing tradition. Her latest release is a collection of traditional songs featuring triumphant heroines and clever ladies getting their due. “Hearken(s) back to more innocent times, of Greenwich Village and pure folk.” The Living Tradition

Armand Aromin and Benedict Gagliardi (The Vox Hunters) are musically bound by a shared love of traditional folk music. Though originally united through Irish instrumental music, they share an enthusiastic affinity for an ever-growing amalgam of songs both inside and far outside the realm of ‘folk music’. With a pair of oft-harmonizing voices accompanied by fiddle, free reeds, and tenor guitar, The Vox Hunters present an exciting and eclectic repertoire of traditional folk songs, driving dance tunes, sean nos dancing and other musical varia.

MONDAY APRIL 3
PROVIDENCE FEMINIST MENDING CIRCLE*
7:30-9:30PM

The group is wide open to all females and those who identify as female. A spirit of welcoming is the very foundation on which we’ve been building, and all are welcome to join in a discussion about a topic that effects us personally.

The Mending Circle is a consciousness-raising discussion group that enables women to meet themselves in one another by sharing experiences, offering support to females and those who identify as female in order to foster healing, assist in developing community and provide information to enable women to make informed decisions. In a time of deepening divisiveness and lessening face to face dialog, this group has, in our humble outset, aspired to hold space for one another and offer support, not through narratives of logic and structure, but by creating verbal snapshots of the lived experiences of women and reigniting the longing for and expectation of community. In kind, the Mending Circle is an organizing tool, pulling theory and hash tag aphorisms down from the ether, and grounding them in an interpersonal community where they can take root and enact change.

MONDAY MARCH 6 (AND EVERY MONDAY)*
PROVIDENCE MENDING CIRCLE

*Please note: The Mending Circle is taking a temporary hiatus for a few weeks in March. Contact providencemendingcircle@gmail.com or visit the FB group listed above for more information.

TUESDAY MARCH 7 (AND EVERY TUESDAY)

- Hosted by Kate Schapira and other Interdependence Days organizers
https://www.facebook.com/interdependencedays

Tuesday March 7:

At Interdependence Day this week, Conceivable Future, whose work connects climate change and reproductive justice, will help us to reflect on and speak to the ways that climate change and our visions of the world’s future shape our visions of our own future and our intimate decisions. We’ll have the option (but not the requirement) for them to record us and add our testimonies to their site.
We’ll also open and close with our usual rituals, and share food and opportunities for neighborly actions. This is going to be a good one; we hope you can come!

SUNDAY MARCH 12
DROP-IN WRITING: WRITING SOUNDS LOUNGE WITH SAKIKO MORI, HOSTED BY FREQUENCY PROVIDENCE
10:30AM-12PM
$5 SUGGESTED

Multi-instrumentalist Sakiko Mori grew up in Japan and graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2004. She has collaborated with a wide array of musicians and groups in performance, recordings, films, animations, dance, and theatre. Sakiko currently lives in Providence, RI.

ABOUT WRITING SOUNDS LOUNGE

What is it?
Writing Sounds Lounge is a monthly drop-in program that invites attendees to write while listening. Guest musicians from the Providence community will perform while attendees are invited (but certainly not required) to write to specified prompts given by Frequency leaders.

Who can attend?
ANYONE. This is a community event. You do not need music or writing experience to attend. There is a small suggested donation to support the musician and the program, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

What will happen?
You will make yourself comfortable in the Carpenter Street gallery. You may choose to drink some coffee or tea. Relax, listen, and write as you are inspired to do so. You will not be asked to share your writing with anyone. After the musician finishes playing (after about 45 minutes), you can leave or choose to stay and discuss your experiences with the musician and each other. Bring your preferred writing materials. You may also want to bring a yoga mat or blanket to make yourself comfortable on the floor of the gallery. Chairs will also be available.

Why?
Frequency looks for ways to bridge writing with other art forms. The Rhode Island arts community is vast and we hope that this program will bring together writers, musicians, music lovers, writers-to-be, and anyone looking to enrich their Sunday mornings among friends.

FRIDAY MARCH 17
MUSIC SHOW
8-10PM

Julian Saporiti is a singer/songwriter from Nashville, TN, now living in Providence, RI. In the early 2000s, he found critical acclaim as the singer for the indie-rock outfit The Young Republic. His latest album No-No Boy takes its source material from the research he has been conducting as a PhD candidate at Brown University. Taking inspiration from interviews with WWII Japanese Incarceration camp survivors, his own family’s history living through the Vietnam War, and other archival stories which explore diverse aspects of Asian-American experience, Saporiti has transformed his research into folk songs in an effort to bring these stories to a broader audience. Performing these well-crafted songs alongside projections of archival photographs, No-No Boy aims to shine a light on experiences which have remained largely hidden in the American consciousness. Touring everywhere from northeastern colleges to red state bars and churches, Saporiti hopes to stimulate conversations about issues of identity, immigration, race, refugees, and other topics which clearly speak to the current political moment.

WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 1
WORKSHOP: Writing Toward Abolition
7-9PM

Once there were no prisons or jails, no ICE detention centers. We know that a world without human cages will come again. We know this because we have power, we have imagination, and we are already building that world together.

Join us at 186 Carpenter Street for “Writing Toward Abolition,” a facilitated group writing exercise, and to see Sincerely, an art show featuring art and poetry by MJ Robinson and Sincere at 186 Carpenter Street.

The gallery will be open from 7-9pm. The workshop will begin right at 7:30 and run for about an hour. I’ll bring some pizzas for us, others are welcome to bring food too.

This event will also happen again on Saturday, Febuary 11th, from 1-3pm.

MJ and Sincere originally met as pen pals through Black and Pink, an open family of LGBTQ prisoners and “free world” allies who support each other. Learn more at www.blackandpink.org

Some work at Sincerely will be for sale with sliding-scale prices; most sales and any donations will go to a re-entry fund for Sincere.

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 4
SCREENING
6:30-8:30PM

Inhabit is a feature length documentary introducing permaculture: a design method that offers an ecological lens for solving issues related to agriculture, economics, governance, and on.

The film presents a vast array of projects, concepts, and people, and it translates the diversity of permaculture into something that can be understood by an equally diverse audience.

For those familiar, it will be a call to action and a glimpse into what’s possible - what kind of projects and solutions are already underway. For those unfamiliar, it will be an introduction to a new way of being and a new way of relating to the Earth. For everyone, it will be a reminder that humans are capable of being planetary healing forces.

SUNDAY JANUARY 15
SOCIAL JUSTICE PHONE BANKING

12PM – 3PM

We all know that the fight for NoDAPL isn’t over and two more proposed pipelines are actively being fought by First Nations people, a hell of a lot of people are involved in making these pipelines a reality, acting to destroy Native Land and endanger the water supply for millions of people. Let’s raise our voices and a little bit of hell in hopes of helping

Come on down to 186 Carpenter from 12-3 (open writers hours beforehand, if you need some down time beforehand to gear up), myself and the Interdependence Day group will be offering lists of numbers to call (state reps, investors, etc.) scripts for those of us who aren’t so great with improv, and even some snacks.

Along with affecting change and maybe fighting your phone anxiety this will be a great opportunity to meet other like minded people with an interest in social justice and share your ideas/goals for a more progressive future.

In the future I am hoping to make this a monthly event with a focus on specific pressing issues in the community. This is an initial foray into activism, so any and all input, aid, or suggestion are welcome and wanted; we can’t do this without each other, and I bet you know some things we don’t.

TUESDAY DECEMBER 6 (AND EVERY TUESDAY)
INTERDEPENDENCE DAYS: OPEN WORKSHOP
6-7:30PM

Interdependence Days are a series of free, public gatherings for residents of Broadway and nearby neighborhoods to foster community, build trust, engage in mutual aid, and imagine and enact ways of living that sustain one another. Each meeting will include a chance for participants to air besetting fears and concerns, a creative or contemplative activity (sometimes led by a guest) and the sharing of needs and skills, held together by ceremony and routine.

Interdependence Days are the next phase of the Climate Anxiety Counseling project, in which I invited strangers in Kennedy Plaza and elsewhere to share with me their climate-change-related and other anxieties (you can see some documentation of and reflections on this project athttps://climateanxieties.wordpress.com).

Providence residents’ descriptions of their fears, worries and needs suggested to me that getting people together to share those concerns, and to consider creatively what forms of alleviation or response to those concerns we might be able to offer each other, would be a good next step.
